28th June 2014 in the city of Stirling
Stirling has been chosen to host the Armed Forces Day national event on 28 June 2014.
Plans are underway to create a spectacular national event in the historic city, enabling the local community the opportunity to lead the nation in honouring the UK Armed Forces past and present.
Armed Forces Day in Stirling will be the sixth national event since the Historic Dockyard Chatham hosted the inaugural event in 2009. This year’s host city of Nottingham attracted 100,000 people, and was attended by The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester representing HM The Queen.
2014 will be the second time Armed Forces Day has been held in Scotland.
The first was Edinburgh in June 2011, when more than 2,500 troops from
all three Services paraded down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Park in
Edinburgh. They were accompanied by RAF flypasts,
the first aerial display in Edinburgh by the Red Arrows in over 20
years. TRH The
Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of
Cornwall in Scotland) attended the event, together
with more than 100,000 members of the public.
Five bids made to the Ministry of Defence to host the 2014 national event, and all were assessed through careful selection against their applications. As the host city, Stirling will receive funding from the Ministry of Defence of £25,000.
If you are planning on showing your support and holding your own Armed Forces Day event next year, the MOD will release details in the new year as to how you can also apply for funding to help with your event.
